At Attenborough School, teachers plan engaging lessons which allow pupils to work through the process of designing, making and evaluating products for a range of real-life purposes. Through these experiences, children learn to think creatively, solve problems and reflect critically on their work in order to improve and refine their ideas.
We use the Projects on a Page resources developed by the Design and Technology Association and adapt these carefully to meet the needs of our learners and our wider curriculum themes. This ensures that pupils develop both technical knowledge and practical skills progressively across the school.
Throughout Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, pupils are exposed to a broad range of Design Technology disciplines and projects, including:
- structures
- mechanisms
- textiles
- food technology and nutrition
- electrical systems
- mechanical systems such as gears, pulleys, cams and levers
- materials and construction techniques
As pupils progress through the school, they develop an increasing understanding of how products are designed and made, alongside the skills needed to safely select tools, equipment and materials for different purposes.
In addition to this, pupils are taught the principles of healthy eating and nutrition through practical cooking experiences. Children prepare a range of healthy dishes whilst developing an understanding of food hygiene, balanced diets and where food comes from. These projects encourage pupils to make informed choices and develop important life skills which they can apply beyond the classroom.
