German

Our Vision:

Attenborough pupils are immersed in another language to better equip them to communicate with other global citizens.

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. Our learners experience living and learning in a multi-cultural country in the heart of Europe.

Our approach to teaching German as a modern foreign language aims to spark pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of German life and culture. Teaching across Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6) enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in spoken and written German and to understand and respond. Our school partnership with the Goerdeler Gymnasium provides regular opportunities for our Year 5/6 learners to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and to read great literature in the German language. These opportunities include shared visits and trips which have resulted in friendships being formed.

We aim to support our learners to:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written German
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that have been learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in German.
